Thoo Mweh Khee School and Senior College (Mae Sot, Thailand)
www.thoomwehkhee.org
TMK is a migrant school running from Nursery to Grade 10 and senior college from Grades 11 to 12 – the whole school contains nearly 800 students. It is situated near the town of Phopra 50 km (30 miles) south of Mae Sot. Most of TMK’s students are Karen refugees from Burma who live in dormitories on site. The language
medium of TMK school is mostly Karen but English, Thai and Burmese are also taught. The language medium of TMK Senior College (TMKSC) is English with the goal of students having options to proceed to higher education and/or gain employment along the border.
Seeking
Volunteers to assist with TMK and TMKSC’s English programmes. In particular, they are looking for teachers for older students in Grades 11 and 12.
Skill/experience required
No teaching experience required. TMK just ask for the willingness to be flexible, adaptable and think outside the box. They also ask volunteers to understand that they live as community where students and teachers all live in the same space - so no such thing as 9-5 or a tangible end or beginning to the school day.
Age restrictions
No age minimum.
Length of placements
TMK require a minimum commitment of 2 months. However, they would prefer volunteers to commit for a whole semester: semesters run from June-October and from November-March.
Support offered to volunteers
How to apply
Email Shirley Worland on [email protected]. TMK would love to work with volunteers now to set up placements for next summer. With June the start of a new semester, there is plenty that can be done in the UK so that volunteers arrive ready to teach!
