AAPP Vacant Position for Internship
ASSITANCE ASSOCIATION FOR POLITICAL PRISONERS (Mae Sot, Thailand)
The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) is a human rights organization based in Mae Sot, Thailand that works for the release of all political prisoners and for the improvement of prison conditions inside Burma. Set up in 2000, AAPP is entirely run by former political prisoners. It carries out a range of activities on behalf of Burma’s political prisoners.
These activities include: providing basic necessities, such as food and medicine, to current political prisoners and their families; documenting on human rights abuses carried out by the regime against political prisoners and pro-democracy activists; and securing support from international governments and organizations to assist in the campaign to free all political prisoners. AAPP is widely recognized as a reliable and credible source of information of political prisoner issues in Burma, by the United Nations, governments, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and respected media outlets around the world.
Seeking an intern to carry out the following tasks:
• Producing AAPP’s monthly chronology report - checking English-language sources of news about
Burma’s political prisoners; editing Burmese-English language translations from Burmese news sources;
cross-referencing sources for accuracy; finalizing monthly statistics in cooperation with AAPP staff
members; and writing an analytical summary of the key monthly developments relating to Burma’s
political prisoners.
• Production of AAPP’s political prisoner profiles - editing and updating existing profiles, and creating
brand-new profiles from scratch. Tasks include checking English-language sources of news about
Burma’s political prisoners; editing Burmese-English language translations from Burmese news and
information sources; cross-referencing sources for accuracy; and interviewing former political
prisoners with a connection to the person whose profile you are creating.
• Previous interns have also undertaken a few hours basic English teaching while they have been here. It
is in a very informal setting and gives the local staff more opportunities to practice their English in a
conversational setting. This is not a main part of an internship here, just something some interns have
done in the past.
Skill/experience required
• Strong commitment to political issues in Burma
• Accuracy and attention to detail
• Tenacity for carrying out internet-based research
• Excellent command of written and spoken English
• Strong editing skills
• Strong analytical skills
• Strong oral communication skills
• Ability to work to tight deadlines
Age restrictions
No age minimum.
Length of placements
Minimum placement of 3 months, at 5 days work per week.
Support offered to volunteers
3000 THB stipend per month.
