Teach For Myanmar
About Teach for Myanmar
Teach for Myanmar (TFM) is a non-profit organisation that matches volunteer teachers with community-based organisations in Burma. TFM provides a unique volunteer opportunity to support the social and educational development of Burma. The TFM team has been based in Burma since 2009; they are educators and volunteer managers working together to ensure a high-quality volunteer experience that provides sustainable education to the people that need it most in Burma. TFM volunteers teach English and academic skills to young adults. All their work is apolitical, focused on making sustainable education more accessible despite social, geographic and financial challenges. Volunteer teachers fill the vital role of sharing knowledge and skills to help young adult students reach their goals in community development.
TFM does not charge a programme fee and offers some financial support for volunteers. However, while in Burma, volunteers are expected to cover expenses for their own food, accommodation, transportation, and other daily expenses. |

Volunteer Placements
TFM works with community-based organisations to create teaching placements that match students’ needs with teachers’ strengths. Volunteers must make a minimum 10 week commitment, with the option to stay as long as a year. Most of their volunteers teach English, social sciences, and/or academic skills to young adults ages 17-30. Class sizes range from 5-30 students, with an average class size of 10 students. Their teachers spend 3 hours a day up to 20 hours per week in the classrooms, leaving ample time to prepare lessons. The students represent many ethnic groups and geographic locations around Burma. The students share one commonality: They are committed to improving their communities.
Volunteers are placed in small to large cities, primarily in Rangoon in Mandalay. TFM tries to accommodate volunteers’ preferences of location and organisation type as much as possible. Before arriving, volunteers know which city they will volunteer in, and detailed placement information is explained during orientation. Volunteers will be able to consult with the program staff in Yangon about logistical, social or academic issues that may arise.
Volunteering with TFM requires pragmatism, patience, independence, initiative and a genuine respect for the host people and their culture.
